Why your city matters
This trips up almost everyone, so it is worth stating plainly.
| Element | Changes by city? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana | No | These are positions in the sky — identical worldwide at any given instant. Only your clock reading differs. |
| Sunrise, Sunset | Yes | The sun rises at a different moment at every longitude |
| Rahu Kaal, Gulika, Yamaganda | Yes | They are measured from sunrise |
| Abhijit Muhurat | Yes | It is the midpoint of the day |
So a panchang that does not ask where you are cannot give you a correct Rahu Kaal — however large the site.
How Rahu Kaal is calculated
There is no mystery to it. Take the time from sunrise to sunset and divide it into eight equal parts. Each weekday is assigned one fixed part:
| Day | Sun | Mon | Tue | Wed | Thu | Fri | Sat |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Part | 8th | 2nd | 7th | 5th | 6th | 4th | 3rd |
Because day length changes with the season and the latitude, that eighth also changes. Rahu Kaal is longer in summer and shorter in winter — and it is computed, not read off a fixed table.
What this does not do
This page gives you the panchang data — the same raw material a priest or astrologer works from. It does not give you a verdict.
A muhurat for a wedding or a housewarming is not decided by the panchang alone; it involves birth charts, guna milan and several other rules. Any site that looks at a date and tells you it is auspicious for your wedding is telling you half the story. Think of this as the weighing scale, not the physician.
Frequently asked questions
What is the tithi today?
Pick your city above and the current tithi appears at the top, along with the exact time it ends and which tithi follows. A tithi is not a day — it is an angle, completed each time the Moon gains 12 degrees on the Sun. That is why it changes partway through the day rather than at midnight.
Why does the panchang differ between cities?
Tithi, nakshatra, yoga and karana are identical worldwide at any given instant — only your clock shows a different time for them. But sunrise, sunset, Rahu Kaal, Gulika, Yamaganda and Abhijit Muhurat are all measured from your local sunrise, so they genuinely differ from city to city.
Does this handle US daylight saving time?
Yes. The page reads the real UTC offset for your selected city on the selected date, so it follows daylight saving automatically. A panchang that uses a fixed offset will be an hour wrong for half the year in the United States, Canada, the UK and Australia.
Can I check the panchang for my date and time of birth?
Yes. Change the date and time above and the calculation follows. This is commonly used to find a birth nakshatra. Use an accurate birth time — the nakshatra changes roughly once a day, so if the birth happened near a changeover even half an hour can shift it. A birth certificate or hospital record is the most reliable source.
Is this a kundli or horoscope?
No. This gives panchang elements — tithi, nakshatra, yoga, karana, rashi. A kundli additionally involves the positions of all nine grahas, the twelve houses and the dasha periods. What you get here is one part of that, not the whole.
How accurate is this?
The calculation uses astronomical formulas rather than a stored table. It has been checked against established panchang sources: the names of the nakshatra, yoga, karana and rashi match exactly, and the transition times fall within one to three minutes. Sunrise and sunset use the standard astronomical definition including atmospheric refraction.
